Coach Lloyd Williams achieved more in his first season as a head coach than many coaches attain in a lifetime. Williams guided the Hillcats to a conference championship, a postseason conference tournament championship, a No. 1 national ranking and a 30-2 record. He was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the 2008-09 season.
Williams joined the Hillcats as an assistant in 2006 and was elevated to head coach in August 2008. Williams helped the Hillcats to a 20-11 record as associate head coach during the inaugural 2007-08 season. He also served as the Cats recruiting coordinator and assembled an inaugural recruiting class that included six Division I transfers. Overall, he has signed eight former Division I players and produced four all-conference selections.
Williams is a former assistant coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio, a NCAA Division I-A member school. He served on the Roadrunners staff for three seasons after completing a standout career as a player for UTSA. The Dallas native was a four year starter for UTSA and finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in assists and steals and ranked 16th on the career scoring list. He was named to the All-Southland Conference Team and was honored as UTSA’s most valuable player as a senior.
Williams conducts individual player workouts and conditioning programs for RSU men’s basketball. His athleticism and experience as a player allows him to actively participate in practice and better assess players as a coach on the floor. In addition to his coaching duties, he serves as the director of the RSU intramural programs.
He is married to Amy Williams, who is in her second year as the head women’s basketball coach at RSU. The couple has a four-year-old daughter named Kennadi.
