Drovers Sink RSU Women in Double Overtime, 81-76

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma used precision free throw shooting to down Rogers State in double overtime at the Claremore Expo Thursday night.

The Drover nailed 14-of-16 attempts from the charity stripe in the two overtime periods to claim an 81-76 win and sweep the season series from the Hillcats. Charite Lewis led all players with 23 points and 18 rebounds for USAO.

RSU went on an 11-0 run early in the first half sparked by two 3-pointers from Hayley KnifeChief. The Hillcats led 28-19 at the half and built a 15-point lead early in the second period. USAO cut the lead to two with a 19-6 run capped by a Kartesha Rambo three with 9:05 remaining. The Drovers took the lead with 5:46 left on a field goal by Yesi Castillo and pushed out in front 51-46 on another Castillo bucket with 4.34 left.

Katie Rice regained the lead for RSU with a putback with 1:41 left. However, the Drovers answered right back and held a three-point lead with 30 seconds to play. KnifeChief sent the game into the first overtime when she buried a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left.

USAO scored the first five points of the first overtime before the Hillcats fought back with a 6-0 run. Hunter Peterson drained a trey from the wing to give RSU a 63-62 advantage. The Drovers jumped back in front with six made free throws and again led by three with one last possession for the Hillcats. Once again KnifeChief came through for the Cats as she found the bottom of the net from beyond the 3-point arc with less than two seconds remaining to send the game into double overtime.

There would be no last second heroics for the Hillcats in the second OT. Juliana Leite opened the scoring with a three to put USAO in front for good with 3:42 to play. The Hillcats briefly cut the lead to one, but were forced to foul and the Drovers made good on 10 of their 12 free throw attempts in the final overtime period. Leite iced the victory with two free throws with 21 seconds left to reach the final margin, 81-76.

While USAO shot 70-percent from the line for the game, the Hillcats managed just 47-percent (15-of-32). KnifeChief led the Cats with 21 points. Yoda Woods added 16 points and nine rebounds while Azzie Knox finished with 10 points and seven rebounds before fouling out.

Lewis and Castillo both posted double-doubles for the Drovers. Castillo tallied 16 points and 17 rebounds to go along with four assists.

Rogers State (11-13, 7-9) remains in the seventh place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standing after the loss. The Hillcats will host No. 15 Southern Nazarene Saturday at the Claremore Expo. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Public Television and RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
