SHAWNEE, Okla. - Rogers State's women's basketball team saved the best for last.
Â
The Hillcats made everything look easy on the final night of the regular season as they disposed of St. Gregory's 84-50 at W. P. Wood Field House in Shawnee Thursday.
Â
Freshman guard Hunter Peterson led the charge with a career-high 24 points. She set a new benchmark for individual scoring by a Hillcat with a near-perfect performance. The Jenks High School product went 8-for-8 from the field, 4-for-4 from 3-point range and hit 4-of-5 free throws.
Â
The Lady Cavs kept the game tight for most of the first half. However, RSU closed the period on a 17-3 run capped by a 19-foot jumper by Hannah Owen at the halftime buzzer. The Hillcats shot a scorching 67-percent from the floor in the first half and led 44-26 at the break.
Â
A fifteen minute halftime break couldn't cool down the Cats. They opened the second half on an 11-1 run. RSU doubled up the Lady Cavs, 60-30 on a Peterson 3-pointer with 15:00 remaining. Peterson hit three treys in the second half as she obliterated her previous career-high of 13 points. Fellow freshman Katie Rice added 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Â
Eleven different Hillcats scored at least one basket in the game. RSU made 8-of-12 attempts from 3-point range and shot 80-percent from the free throw line. The Cats also outrebounded St. Gregory's 41-21 in the contest.
Â
Rogers State (13-17, 9-13) earned a share of seventh place in the final Sooner Athletic Conference standings with the win. The Hillcats lost out to Wayland Baptist on a tie-breaker and will play as the eight seed in next week's conference tournament at Oklahoma Christian. RSU will play ninth-seeded John Brown in the opening round on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
