Baseball Hillcats Complete Sweep of Drovers

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State pitching staff allowed just two runs over 14 innings against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma as RSU swept the Drovers at the Hillcat Complex Sunday afternoon.

After taking the first game of the series in Chickasha Saturday, RSU won 3-1 and 4-1 on Sunday to complete the series sweep. It marked the first time the Hillcats have swept a Sooner Athletic Conference opponent in a three-game series.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead and junior right-hander Shawn Epps did the rest in Sunday's opener. Epps tossed a complete-game and allowed one run on five hits. He faced just three batters over the minimum in the seven-inning game.

Ryan Littlejohn led off the bottom of the second inning with a hard single to left field and scored when Brandon Denton drew a bases loaded walk. The Cats added two runs in the fifth on back-to-back two-out hits by Denton and Greg Speed. A trio of USAO pitchers held the Hillcats to just five hits in the game but received no backing from the Drover offense. USAO's only run came on a solo homer by Brad Sylvester in the top of the fifth inning.

Epps (4-1) picked up his fourth win in five starts. Denton tallied two RBI while Blake Kelley continued his recent hitting tear with two hits in three at-bats.

GAME TWO

Chris Graves and Grant Cosby combined to allow one run over seven innings and closed the books on USAO for the weekend. The only blemish came in the fourth inning when Cody Howard belted a two-out RBI single to left field off Graves.

Cosby allowed just one hit over the final three innings to record his first save of the season. The Hillcats took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the second inning. Zach Hamby led off with a double and Coby Wright and Joe Faircloth followed with singles. After USAO scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning, Ryan Salsbury answered with a two-out RBI double to push the lead back to two runs. Littlejohn, Wright and Salsbury roped three consecutive singles in the sixth to add an insurance run and reach the final margin, 4-1.

Wright paced the Hillcats with three hits and two RBI while Salsbury went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Graves (2-0) earned the win with four innings of work. The RSU pitching staff allowed a total of three runs over 23 innings against the Drovers for the weekend.

Rogers State (13-5, 7-4) moved into sole possession of fifth place in the conference standings with the series sweep. The Hillcats return home Tuesday to host College of the Ozarks in a doubleheader at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
