Stars Sweep Hillcats with 10-2 Win

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State suffered its first loss of April as fifth-ranked Oklahoma City snapped the Hillcats eight-game winning streak with a 10-2 victory at the Hillcat Complex Sunday.

The Stars jumped out to a five-run lead after three innings and scored the first 10 runs of the game. Caleb Annesley homered to start the second inning off RSU starter Sam Cornell. Two hits and two walks later, Cornell was pulled from the game and OCU had gained a 3-0 advantage.

The Stars touched reliever Shawn Epps for two more runs in the third while OCU starter Tyler Kelsey continued to keep the Cats off the scoreboard. Kelsey (5-0) scattered four hits across five innings of work with six strikeouts. RSU trailed 10-0 before breaking through for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Blake Kelley picked up an infield single and later scored on a wild throw. Brandon Denton singled home Hank Gray for the only other run of the game for the Hillcats.

Five RSU pitchers combined to allow 10 runs on 12 hits. Cornell (4-2) took the loss in his shortest start of the season. The freshman left-hander allowed three runs on five hits while recording just four outs. Kelley led the Hillcats with two hits. Corbett Thompson finished 3-for-4 with two RBI for OCU.

With the win the Stars completed a three-game sweep of the Hillcats. OCU improved to 40-8 and 19-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference play.

Rogers State (26-12, 13-11) remains in sixth place in the conference standings with three-game sets remaining with Mid-America Christian and Oklahoma Christian. The Hillcats will host Northeastern State University Tuesday night at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
