PLAINVIEW, Texas - Brandon Denton and Zach Hamby combined for four home runs as Rogers State picked up its first ever postseason win with a 15-5 drubbing of St. Gregory's Wednesday at Wilder Field in Plainview, Texas.
Â
The Hillcats scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning to take control from the start. Denton's RBI double put a cap on the five-run frame. The Cavaliers cut into the lead with single runs in the third in the fourth off RSU starter Shawn Epps to make it 5-2. Denton swatted his first homer of the season to lead off the fourth inning and then added a second long ball in the fifth to put the Cats up by nine runs.
Â
Hamby ripped a solo homer in the sixth to stretch the lead to 11-2. However, SGU responded with three runs off reliever Tyler Whitaker in the seventh to keep the outcome in doubt for a moment. The moment faded quickly as RSU scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to reach the run-rule, 15-5.
Â
Greg Speed slapped a single up the middle and Ryan Salsbury added a single to left. After Cory Underhill booted a grounder off the bat of Blake Kelley, Hamby delivered the final blow. The junior first baseman hammered a walk-off three-run homer deep over the left field wall to finish off the Cavs.
Â
Hamby went 4-for-5 with seven RBI while Denton posted a 3-for-4 day with four runs batted in. Salsbury and Travis Harold also had three hits apiece for the Hillcats. RSU tallied 17 hits in the contest while showcasing another outstanding game on defense. Blake Kelley saved two runs with his glove in the third inning while Coby Wright and Ryan Salsbury continued to show their defensive prowess on the infield.
Â
Epps (5-2) earned the win with five innings of work. He scattered four hits and gave up two runs while striking out two. Chris King (4-9) was tagged with the loss after surrendering 11 runs on eight hits.
