LUBBOCK, Texas - A strong second half performance allowed Rogers State to outlast Lubbock Christian, 93-84, at Rip Griffin Center Saturday afternoon in Lubbock, Texas.
The Hillcats and Chaparrals were tied five times in the first half. RSU made a 19-11 push in the final nine minutes of the period to hold an eight point lead at half. The Cats built the lead lead off the scoring of Reggie Burnett and Lance Sullivan, who combined for 13 of the final 19 points in the first half. Burnett entered the intermission with 13 points in only 10 first half minutes.
Deveric Taylor caused headaches for the Chaparrals at the midpoint of the second half by driving to the basket and finishing with 11 points. The junior guard was able to score three points the traditional way off strong layups and trips to the free throw line. He scored nine points over a four-minute stretch to keep the Hillcats in the mix.
In the final seven minutes Rogers State outscored Lubbock Christian 16-7 behind the scoring of Burnett. The junior guard was a major factor in the Hillcats outscoring the Chaparrals off the bench, 46-5.
RSU overcame poor shooting from behind the 3-point arc with 52 points in the paint. The Cats also shot 78-percent from the free throw line for the game and 85-percent from the stripe in the second half.
The Chaparrals were led in scoring by Kenny Hewitt with 30 points while Douglas Williams finished with 23 and Al Duvall rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10. Lubbock Christian only saw six players make an appearance on the scoring line book while all 10 RSU every players that saw time made a mark on the point sheet.
Rogers State (13-7, 6-6) improved to 6-0 all-time against the Chaparrals. The Hillcats will head to Plainview, Texas, Saturday afternoon to take on Wayland Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. with live play-by-play coverage on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
