CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State men's basketball team opened its home slate with a 92-63 victory over Dallas Christian College on Friday night at the Claremore Expo.
The Hillcats jumped out to a 12 point lead, capped off with back-to-back buckets by senior John Boyd. Boyd finished the game with a team-high 22 points while adding five rebounds and three steals. In all, five players finished in double figures. Matt Kellogg posted 16 points, Chris Francis added 15 points, Brandon Mims chipped in 14 points and Alburey Doss rounded out the group with 10 points.
"It was really good to get the first win under our belts," Head Coach Justin Barkley said. "Our guys have put in the extra work and have improved over the last week."
The Cats finished the night breaking the single game 3-point record with 17 treys. Francis drained five shots from behind the arc while Boyd, Mims and Kellogg each chipped in three buckets from long distance. The previous record was 14, set last season against St. Gregory's on Jan. 14.
The Hillcats took a 50-35 lead into the locker room at the break. The Crusaders cut RSU's lead to 11 points in the opening minutes of the second half but the Hillcats used a 10-0 run to take a 21 point lead (62-41) and kept DCC at arm's length the rest of the way.
Mims finished the night perfect from behind the arc while finishing 4-5 from the field and 3-4 from the charity stripe.
"I was really proud of the way Brandon Mims played tonight," Barkley said. "He came out and shot the ball the way I knew he could."
RSU shot 57 percent from 3-point range, 69 percent from the line and 51 percent from the floor.
The Crusaders were led by Antoine Warren with 22 points and Isaac Gonzalez with 14 points.
The Hillcats (1-1) are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Oral Roberts. Tip-off set for 7 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
