CLAREMORE, Okla. - Top-ranked Lubbock Christian completed a series sweep of Rogers State with its third consecutive two-run victory Friday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.
Â
Timely hits eluded the Diamond Cats for the second day in a row. The Chaps plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third inning thanks in part to two errors at the corner infield positions. RSU answered with a run in the bottom of the third when Jairo Valdez raced home on a throwing error by LCU first baseman Doug Kroll.
Â
Austin Stewart put the Chaps back in front by two when he singled to start the fifth inning and later scored on a wild pitch. The Hillcats got back within two with three straight hits to start the bottom of the fifth. Valdez led off with a single to right and Tyler Harold followed with a single up the middle. Brandt Barnes picked up an RBI with a rip to right. Zach Hamby moved the tying run into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, but the middle of the RSU lineup was unable to come through.
Â
The Cats stranded runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth. RSU stranded seven base runners in the contest and left 23 runners on base during the three-game series.
Â
Sophomore starter Jacob Weenas (1-1) turned in another a quality start for the Hillcats. The lefty allowed four runs, one earned, on seven hits in seven innings of work. He tallied six strikeouts while walking just two. Jordan Clark tossed two innings of scoreless relief to keep the Cats in it until their final at-bat.
Â
Tyler Rogers (5-0) kept his perfect record intact with five solid innings for LCU. He allowed one unearned run on one hit while fanning five. Hunter Scott made his third appearance in as many games out of the bullpen for the Chaps. Scott recorded the final four outs to record his second save of the weekend.
Â
Rogers State (15-9, 5-7) was swept in its second consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference series while Lubbock Christian (21-9, 9-3) has now won 33 of its last 34 SAC series. The Hillcats will look to rebound next week with a three-game set against No. 3 Oklahoma City University. The series will begin with a nine-inning game at OCU on Thursday and conclude with a Saturday doubleheader in Claremore. First pitch of Saturday's twin bill is slated for 2 p.m. and will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
