EDMOND, Okla. – Last second heroics by Kendrell Thompson gave the No. 8 Rogers State men's basketball team a 71-69 victory over Oklahoma Christian Thursday night inside the Eagles Nest.
Thompson's 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining tied the contest at 69-69. A turnover by Kendre Talley gave RSU the ball 20 seconds remaining as the Eagles committed two fouls ticking the clock down to 14 seconds.
A spin move by Thompson shook off the defender freeing the junior guard at the free throw line with just a few seconds remaining. A bullet pass under the basket to a cutting Donald Williams gave an easy layup and the Hillcats a 71-69 lead with 1.7 seconds remaining.
A last heave by Oklahoma Christian as the horn sounded clanged off the rim and gave RSU the come from behind victory as the Cats outscored the Eagles 8-0 in the final two minutes.
Coach Justin Barkley's squad led at the half 38-33 and built its largest lead of the contest just under two minutes into the second stanza on a field goal in the paint by Thompson.
Thompson led all scorers with 20 points as Donald Williams chipped in with 17 points. The high flying Kenny Edwards rounded out the Hillcat double-digit scorers with 11 point, six of which came on high flying dunks that left the Eagle fans in awe.
The Eagles had their biggest advantage over the Hillcats at seven points with 3:40 remaining in the game. Will Reinke finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sand Springs, Okla. native Nick Tate tallied 15 points as Willie Harper recorded 11 points for OC.
RSU outscored the Eagles 32-14 in the paint as Oklahoma Christian (10-6, 4-5) outrebounded the Cats 35-33.
