CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 5 Rogers State men's basketball left Hillcat fans with a different feeling following a 78-68 loss to St. Gregory's at the Claremore Expo Monday night.
For the first time since January 2, 2012 the RSU men dropped a home contest, in turn giving the Cavaliers their second conference victory of the season.
The Hillcats were able to build a 10 point advantage in the opening half, led by a 10 point first period performance by Donald Williams. SGU answered in the final 1:42 of the first, with an 8-0 run to enter the half trailing 35-33 to RSU.
The Cavs opened the second period by quickly tying the game and then built a five point lead in the first seven minutes. SGU added to the lead gaining an 11 point advantage with 6:10 to go at 65-54 on a Fayzon Richey layup.
Donald Williams hit his seventh 3-pointer of the game with 4:09 remaining to trim the Cavs lead to 65-59 but RSU wasn't able to cut it any closer.
Richey led all scorers with 34 points, hitting 11-of-11 from the charity stripe as SGU connected on 77.4 percent from the free throw line. Brock Vorwald closed out the game with 14 points for the Cavs.
Leading RSU in scoring was Williams with 29 points. The junior guard tied the school single-game record for 3-point makes with seven, matching Deveric Taylor's record vs. Oklahoma City on Jan. 15, 2009.
Larry Cox was the only other Hillcat to finish in double figure scoring with 11 points. The Byron, Ga. native pulled in 11 boards to tally his first double-double of the season.
St. Gregory's (5-15, 2-12) hauled in 35 rebounds over the Hillcats 33 boards. RSU shot just 38.9 percent from the field while the Cavaliers hit 48 percent of their shots.
Rogers State (20-5, 13-5) will travel to face the Oklahoma City Stars on Thursday for an 8 p.m. start time. The Hillcat Network will provide live audio streaming at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
