Hillcats Clip War Hawks, 65-63

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State women's basketball team won its second-straight Heartland Conference matchup as the Hillcats edged McMurry (Texas), 65-63, on Saturday afternoon at the Claremore Expo.

Led by Clarissa Cannon, who tallied her sixth double-double of the season, the Hillcats clung to a single digit lead down the stretch to claim the win. The Hillcats relinquished the lead for the first time in second half at the nine minute mark as Keshia Collins hit a three-pointer to give McMurry a one point advantage. The teams traded buckets and the Warriors used a 6-0 run to take a three point advantage, their largest lead of the half, with four minutes to play. RSU ended the contest with a 9-4 run to claim the win. With less than a minute remaining in the game Cannon grabbed a rebound and a layup in traffic to push the advantage to 64-59. The War Hawks answered with a bucket by Tory Salazar but RSU ran the clock down to nine seconds on the next possession and Kami Bunch drained a free throw to push the RSU advantage to four points. Taylor Russell tallied a bucket at the buzzer but the Hillcats held on for the two-point victory.

RSU held a single digit lead for most of the first half. The War Hawks tied the game with 2:30 to play in the frame but Cannon converted a conventional three-point play to give the Hillcats the lead and DaNara Day double it with a trey. RSU ended the first stanza with a 4-0 run to take a 35-31 lead into intermission.

Cannon tallied 21 points to fuel the Cats to victory. The Las Vegas, Nevada native grabbed 16 boards which is a career high for the senior. She was joined in double digit scoring by Katy Harsen with 15 points and Day with 14 points. Kami Bunch dished eight assists on the nights as she moves to 98 assists on the season.

Collins led the War Hawks with a game-high 23 points. Despite Cannons career effort on the boards, McMurry won the battle on the glass, 48-37.

Rogers State (7-12, 4-9 HC) will return to action with a West Texas road trip next week. Thursday the Hillcats will take on Lubbock Christian at 5:30 p.m. and cap off the road spurt on Saturday against Texas- Permian Basin in Odessa.
