DALLAS, Texas – Jerry Dixon scored 17 of his career-best 30 points from the free throw line but the Rogers State men's basketball team could not overcome five Dallas Baptist players in double figures in a 93-72 loss Saturday afternoon at The Burg Center in Heartland Conference action.
Dixon recorded the fifth 30-plus point game in school history and the second-highest single game total for the Hillcats this season hitting 17-of-23 from the charity stripe.
The Patriots led from start to finish opening the game with a 7-2 spurt before the Hillcats closed the gap to 10-8 with a run of their own as Deran Banton and Dixon connected on jumpers. DBU took command for the rest of the first half holding a 36-26 lead at intermission.
The deficit swelled to as many as 21 points near the midpoint in the second half and the Patriots closed things out for the conference victory, 92-73, splitting the season series.
RSU was outscored by the DBU bench by a 39-15 margin and the Patriots controlled the glass with a 39-24 difference in rebounds led by nine from reserves Jonathan Perry and Chris Strong.
Deran Banton netted all 15 bench points for RSU while Damion Hooks added 14 as both players made six field goals in the loss.
DBU's Perry paced all scorers and five Patriots in double figures with 22 points in only 24 minutes of action connecting on 10-of-11 from the free throw line.
Rogers State (15-9, 10-6 HC) returns to Claremore for its home finale and Senior Night Thursday, Feb. 20 against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 7:30 p.m. The 2014 Hunter the Hillcat bobblehead will be given away to the first 750 fans at the Claremore Expo for the basketball doubleheader.
