SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Rogers State baseball team tallied its first Heartland Conference victory with a, 3-2, win over No. 7 St. Mary's University at Dickson Stadium on Saturday.
The Hillcats avoided the series sweep with the win over StMU (11-3, 2-1 HC) and were led by the pitching performance by Mason Marquette (3-0) who tossed the complete game victory.
RSU opened the contest with a 2-0 lead, denting the scoreboard in the first frame. With two outs, Caleb Kohlmeyer drew a walk and Blake Gipson followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Johan Ochoa drove in both runs with a single to right field to give RSU the lead.
The Rattlers cut the Hillcat lead in half in the bottom of the third inning with a sacrifice fly by Drake Roberts.
Kohlmeyer added to the RSU lead in the fifth with a RBI single to left field but the Rattlers continued to battle, adding a run in the sixth. The Hillcats left runners in scoring position in each of the last three innings but held on for the win, holding the Rattlers scoreless over the final three innings, retiring the Rattlers in order in the ninth.
Marquette allowed two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Nathan Humpal (1-1) was tagged with the loss for StMU, tossing seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits with four strikeouts.
Kohlmeyer, Crow and Nick Malter led the Hillcats with two hits apiece.
Rogers State (7-3, 1-2 HC) returns to action on Tuesday as the Hillcats host Northeastern State at the Diamond Sports Complex. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
