FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Rogers State women's golf team moved up to finish third at the UA Fort Smith Lady Lions Classic held at Hardscrabble Country Club Tuesday using 78 pars as a team to lead the 10-team field.
Michelle Tierney earned a top-10 finish placing in a tie for sixth after carding an 81 in the final round leading the Hillcats to a team 321. Tierney was tied atop the field in par-three scoring at +2.
Whitney Hocutt matched her round one score netting an 82 in round two finishing in a tie for 13th with teammate Kina Boone at 164. Boone added an event-leading third birdie for the tournament while recording an 83 Tuesday.
Raquel Trevino showed the greatest improvement from day one to day two for RSU firing an 81 to finish 19th with a 167. Chelsea Burney added an 88 for the Hillcats to close the event 24th at 170.
Newman picked up the team title winning by 12 strokes over second-place Southwest Oklahoma State while the Hillcats were third with a final score of 651. Kendall Anderson of Newman and Margaret Musser of SWOSU were named co-champions with scores of 155.
Rogers State closes the spring season next week at the Natural State Invitational in Hebner Springs, Ark., playing the Red Apple Inn & Country Club March 31-April 1.
