CLAREMORE, Okla. –
Donald Moore and
J.C. Hartzler each scored 24 points in a wire-to-wire, non-conference victory over Cameron, 76-62, Saturday afternoon at the Claremore Expo Center.
Hartzler scored 18 of his points in the opening half, while Moore added 17 in the second half as the Hillcats continued their unbeaten streak, winning seven-straight to open the 2015-16 campaign.
Robert Johnson converted in the paint on the opening possession for RSU 13 seconds into the game and the Aggies quickly tied it 2-2 before the Hillcats took control behind a Hartzler three pointer.
Travis Hester capped a 12-4 run with a long-range shot as RSU pushed its lead to 19-10.
A jumper from
Corey Ayala put the margin to double figures at the 10:54 mark of the opening half. Cameron closed the gap to five points, 29-24, until
Travis Julien got a mid-court steal and broke away for a one-handed slam moving the lead back to double digits during a 7-0 run late in the half. Hartzler hit a pair of free throws closing the scoring in the stanza as the Hillcats took a 41-28 lead into the locker room.
Jeylyn Sharpe knocked down one of his three triples in the game early in the second half to match RSU's largest advantage of the night, 46-30. The Aggies scored the next eight points to get back into the game and later made it a five-point deficit, 53-48. The Hillcats held off the rally and used a 10-2 run down the stretch to close out the win, 76-62.
Moore took over the game firing up the bench and the home crowd by hitting three of his four from downtown in the final eight minutes. The senior ended the game a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line on his way to a career-high 24 points. Johnson joined Moore and Hartzler in double figures adding 10 points.
Delvonte Pierre paced three Cameron players in double digits with 13 points. Deondre Ray and JV Long scored 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the third-consecutive loss for the Aggies.
The Hillcats (7-0 overall) open the Heartland Conference slate next Saturday, Dec. 12, at home against Dallas Baptist. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. and can be caught live on the Hillcat Network at
