Hillcats Get to 20 Wins, Split at Texas A&M International

LAREDO, Texas – The Rogers State baseball team reached 20 wins as they split at Texas A&M International on Friday at Jorge Haynes Field. The Hillcats plated six runs in the extra-inning eighth of game one to blow open a tied game and win 12-6 in the scheduled seven-inning game. TAMIU won the nightcap, 5-1.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats scored six runs in an extra-inning eighth to prevail, 12-6, in game one.

With two outs in the eighth inning and the bases loaded, Caleb Kohlmeyer doubled to right field to put RSU up 8-6 as Jason Marley and Garrett Hall scored. The runs continued as Ismael Orozco doubled to left to plate Kohlmeyer and Colton Crocker. Cesar Rodriguez made it three straight two-RBI doubles for a 12-6 score as Orozco and Chris Miguel came home on the hit.

All six runs in the inning were unearned as Hall reached on an error by the Dustdevil pitcher early in the inning.

Kohlmeyer put the Hillcats up 3-0 in the second inning on a three-run home run, his team-leading fifth of the season.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Dustdevils scored two runs. A bases loaded walk started the scoring with a sac fly making it 3-2.

RSU again used the long ball in the third inning as Marley hit his first career home run, a three-run homer, to increase the Hillcat advantage to 6-2.

A three-run third inning from TAMIU cut its deficit to one run at 6-5. A two-RBI double scored two of the runs, and the Dustdevils pulled to within one with an RBI double.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, TAMIU tied the game with an RBI groundout for the 6-6 tie. Rusty Huber ended the inning with a strikeout, his second of the inning, as he came in with two on and no outs in the inning.

Huber pitched the final three innings and totaled four strikeouts with no hits allowed. The junior from San Diego, California moved to 2-0 on the season as he picked up the win.

Rodriguez totaled a game-high three hits going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Kohlmeyer finished with five RBI as he went 2-for-5. Marley registered a 2-for-3 day with one walk and three RBI. Lead-off hitter Jordan Garr went 2-for-4 with one walk and one run scored. The Hillcats tallied 11 hits.

GAME TWO

The Dustdevils totaled three runs in the third inning to pull away for a 5-1 victory in game two.

TAMIU started with an RBI single to left field to plate the first run, and then hit a two-run homer to gain the 3-0 advantage.

Marley went yard again, the second time today, hitting a solo shot to keep the Hillcats in it at 3-1 in the fourth inning.

TAMIU, however, added runs in the fourth and fifth inning to get the 5-1 win. An RBI double scored the one run in the fourth, and the final run of the game came in the fifth on an RBI single through the infield.

Marley finished 2-for-3 with the one RBI. For the day, Marley went 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBI. Kohlmeyer was 2-for-3 as well at the plate in game two.
