Hillcats Get First Conference Win On Martin's Penalty Kick Goal

LAREDO, Texas – Senior defender Korie Martin scored the game-winning penalty kick goal to push the Rogers State women's soccer team to a 1-0 league win over Texas A&M International on Saturday afternoon at the Dustdevil Soccer Field.

Martin, who scored her first career goal, calmly knocked in the penalty kick to the upper right corner in the 72nd minute to put the Hillcats up, 1-0. Martin got the opportunity for the penalty after a yellow card on the Dustdevils.

In a tough and physical game, TAMIU played the final 15 minutes with 10 players after a red card in the 75th minute. The final 20 minutes featured four yellow cards, including three for the home side.

The Hillcats seemed to slightly control play in the first half as they held an 8-6 advantage in shots. Martin put an early shot on goal in the ninth minute with Paige Pontarolo and Addy Pritchard each adding shots on target later in the first period.

RSU continued to push in the second half with Taylor Neubecker forcing a save from the Dustdevil goalkeeper after a shot in the 63rd minute. The Hillcats kept the pressure on TAMIU, resulting in the penalty kick in the 72nd minute after the yellow card.

Tayler Stover kept the Dustdevils scoreless with a season-high seven saves as she faced 17 shots. The sophomore made three saves in the final 10 minutes to keep the clean sheet. With the shutout, Stover has totaled three on the season and moved to 4-2 in goal.

With the victory, the Hillcats moved to 4-2 on the season, the four wins are the most in a season since 2012 when RSU went 12-3-3.

The Hillcats (4-2, 1-2) return home for two league contests. The two-game stretch starts with conference-leading St. Edward's on Thursday (Sept. 22) at 5 p.m. at Soldier Field. Coverage will be available on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live
