CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State Men's Basketball improved to 3-0 on the season with a 91-84 victory over Oklahoma Baptist in the home opener for the Hillcats at the Claremore Expo Center.
The Hillcats opened up a 21-point lead on the former Sooner Athletic Conference rival, but Rogers State had to hold off a second-half surge from the Bison to open up the home schedule with a victory.
After the Bison had cut the deficit to four,
Brewster Peacock hit a trio of three pointers to help the Hillcats pull away. Peacock hit a three to make it 74-67 with 5:17 to go.
Following an answered three by the visitors, Peacock sank another three and followed it up with a third-straight three for the Hillcats on the next possession to put Rogers State in front by 10 with 2:23 to go.
Rogers State would have a two-point jumper from
Darraja Parnell and the Hillcats would sink seven of eight free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Peacock finished with a game high 21 points, finishing 6-of-12 from the field, including five three pointers, which matched a career high set in the season opener. The junior also led the Hillcats with seven rebounds.
Five Hillcats would finish in double figures with
Marques Sumner the best of the rest, finishing with 16 points after leading the Hillcats in scoring over the first two games. Sumner also matched a career high in assists, finishing with six.
Gabriel Ferreira had a season high 14 points in the game on 5-of-6 shooting. The senior was also 4-of-4 from the line and had three rebounds and a block.
Tavian Davis was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line and finished with 12 points. The senior guard finished with five rebounds, four assists and a block.
Freshman
Jett Sternberger matched Davis with 12 in his home debut. The guard was 3-for-5 from the field with a three pointer and 5-of-6 from the line. Sternberger also had three rebounds and two steals in the game.
Christopher Miller and Parnell both had eight points in the game for the Hillcats to wrap the scoring. Miller was 3-for-5 before fouling out. He also had four rebounds and a block before fouling out.
Parnell was a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor, all inside the arc, as he finished with a season high. He also grabbed four rebounds and had a steal.
Rogers State was 54.5 percent from the field in the game. The Hillcats were also 24-of-26 from the free-throw line.
The Hillcats also outrebounded Oklahoma Baptist 34-29.
Rogers State had 14 turnovers, with Oklahoma Baptist finishing with 13. Both teams had four steals. However, the Hillcats turned Bison turnovers into 17 points, while Oklahoma Baptist had just nine points off turnovers.
With the win, the Hillcats completed a three-game sweep of Great American Conference schools. The Hillcats defeated Southern Arkansas and Henderson State last week. Rogers State will not play another GAC school in the regular season.
Rogers State will be back on the road for its final exhibition game of the season, taking on Division I Oral Roberts in Tulsa. The Hillcats will face the Golden Eagles on Tuesday, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. at the Mabee Center.
