LAREDO, Texas. - The Rogers State men's golf team opened up its season on Monday with the first two rounds of the Jack Brown Memorial Invitational hosted by Texas A&M International at the Laredo Country Club.
Rogers State, who is looking to defend the Jack Brown Memorial team title from last season, has three Hillcats in the top five of the 37-golfer field after two rounds. Rogers State also sits second overall out of seven teams, just three shots off leader St. Mary's heading into the final round.
Luke Palmowski picked up right where he left off the 2019-20 season, battling at the top of the leaderboard. After two top-five finishes in three events last spring, Palmowski sits third through two rounds. Palmowski shot back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 on the day and sits third overall, just three strokes off the lead.
Palmowski finished with four birdies in each round. His eight birdies on the day are tied for the most in the tournament.
Two shots behind Palmowski after day one is fellow junior
Aidan Gavey. After a 74 in the opening round, Gavey matched Palmowski with an even-par round of 72 in the afternoon. Gavey finished with six birdies on the day and had 12 pars in the second round to climb into fourth place overall.
Freshman
Elliot-Han Monteremal also sits in the top five after his first two collegiate rounds. Monteremal opened up with a 76, but matched Palmowski and Gavey with an even-par round in the afternoon session.
Gonzalo Chaves sits 27
th after day one. Chaves started the day with an 82 in the opening round but improved four shots in round two to card the final scoring round of the afternoon with a 78.
Logan Meehan wrapped the scoring in round one with an 81, but finished with an 82 in the second round to fall into a tie for 31
st.
Up Next: The Hillcats will be back on the course on Tuesday for the third and final round of the Jack Brown Memorial Invitational. The round begins at 8 a.m. with Hillcats set to start on hole 10.
