KEARNEY, Neb. – Rogers State women's basketball (2-5, 0-1 MIAA) fell 76-37 in the MIAA opener to Nebraska-Kearney (8-1, 1-0 MIAA) on the road on Thursday.
Jordan Lewis led the Hillcats with 11 points to go along with a rebound and a block. Bailey Kliewer added seven points with five rebounds, two assists and a block. Tangee Gagau contributed five points with two rebounds.
The Hillcats opened things with Lewis scoring the first bucket of the game to give RSU a brief 2-0 lead. The Lopers then nproceed to go on a 11-0 run for a 11-2 margin. They went on to carry a 17-6 lead into the second quarter.
In the final 10 minutes of the half, the Hillcats showed some signs of life as they were able to hold the lead in check for the first four minutes of the period. However, UNK again asserted themselves as they closed out the half on a 8-2 run to take a 33-16 advantage into the break.
The Lopers held onto the momentum as they began the second half on a 11-0 run and dashed out to a 43-16 lead. Headed into the fourth quarter, they held a 51-19 advantage.
In the final 10 minutes, RSU finally began to see some success on offense as they opened the period on a 9-2 run to cut into the deficit 53-28. Unfortunately, UNK responded with a 14-3 run to go back up 67-31. The Hillcats kept fighting as they went on a 6-4 run to cut the lead to 71-37. The Lopers eventually took the win 76-37.
RSU will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 3 as they wrap up the road trip in Hays, Kan. against No. 23 Fort Hays State. Tip off is set for 1:30 p.m.
