CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (5-8, 1-2 MIAA) dropped the series finale 2-1 to Newman (11-4, 2-1 MIAA) on Monday.
After both starters worked scoreless frames to open the game, the Jets struck first to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The run scored on a sacrifice fly to right.
The Hillcats knotted it up at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Skylar Nelson came home as Jesse Holguin was caught trying to steal second.
Both starters went into cruise control over the next four innings as neither gave up a run. During that span, RSU stranded four runners on the bases.
Newman broke the stalemate in the top of the ninth to seal the 2-1 win. The winning run came on a solo home run to left center.
Garrett Vandeventer (3-0) earned the win with Connor Langrell (3) earning the save. Unfortunately, Nathan Chase (1-1) took the loss after working 8.1 innings with eight strikeouts and only allowing four hits and two walks.
The Hillcats will be back in action on Tuesday, March 1 at the Diamond Sports Complex as they face against Northwestern Oklahoma State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Â
