Pullum, RSU Upset Hornets In Overtime Classic

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Devin Pullum's game winning three pointer with two seconds left propelled Rogers State men's basketball (13-7, 7-7 MIAA) to a 82-81 victory over Emporia State (16-6, 11-5 MIAA) in an overtime thriller on Saturday.
 
Four Hillcats finished in double digits in the win. Pullum led team with 23 points as well as dishing out a team-high five assists and coming up with three steals. Both Gerren Jackson and Jordan Coblin put up 14 points, with Jackson adding four assists and Coblin continuing his hot streak from the free throw line shooting 5-for-6. Tylan Dean added 11 points. Ugo Obineke cleaned up a game-high eight rebounds to go along with eight points and a block.
 
This game was incredibly close from the jump with momentum constantly shifting back and forth, and featured 16 lead changes and 13 ties. RSU opened the game with a 4-0 run before the Hornets went on a 8-0 run of their own to take their first lead at 8-4. They managed to push this lead out to their largest of the game at 15-8. The Hillcats steadied themselves and tore off a 10-2 run to go back up 18-17. From there, the two sides traded points and went back and forth for the remainder of the half. With 10 seconds left, two made free throws by Pullum gave RSU a slim 35-34 advantage headed into the locker room.
 
The second half was just as hard fought. After matching each other shot for shot to open the period, the Hillcats went up 45-43 and controlled the lead for the majority of the half, pushing out to their largest lead at 67-58. However, the Hornets fought back and managed to retake the lead 70-69 with 46 seconds left. A foul and a made free throw by Gerren Jackson with 16 seconds remaining forced the game into overtime knotted at 70-70.
 
In the overtime period, Emporia State immediately but the Hillcats on their heels with a 7-2 run to go up 77-72 with 2:33 left. With 47 seconds on the clock, Pullum pulled up from deep to cut the margin to a single possession at 81-79. RSU got a defensive stop on the ensuing possession and called a timeout. With 18 second remaining, they drove down the court and got the ball to Pullum who drained the game winning shot from just beyond the arc to seal the 82-81 upset.
 
The Hillcats will need to carry this momentum into their next home game on Monday, Feb. 7 as they take on Washburn. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
