EMPORIA, Kan. — Rogers State women's soccer (1-5-5, 1-3-2 MIAA) and Emporia State (7-3-2, 4-0-2 MIAA) battled to a 2-2 draw at ESU Pitch on Friday, with RSU scoring both goals in the second half to secure the tie.
Early on in the match, the Hornets gained an opportunity with a corner kick in the 4th minute, followed by a shot from Megyn Mahloch at 8:16, which went wide. RSU responded with their own corner kick in the 5th minute, but struggled to capitalize on any offensive efforts.
Both teams faced defensive challenges, with numerous fouls committed throughout the period. Emporia State had several shot attempts, including a saved attempt by Madeline Bracy in the 27th minute. The Hillcats also tested the Hornets' defense with shots from
Khari Carreno and
Taylor Colmo in the final minutes of the half, both of which were saved by ESU's keeper Mackenzi Goen. The period concluded with a scoreless draw, with both teams unable to break through the opposing defenses.
Emporia State opened the second half with a goal by Megan Kephart in the 48th minute, assisted by Ella Favot, taking the lead. Kephart scored again in the 63rd minute, extending ESU's advantage to 2-0. The Hillcats responded when
Delana King (3) found the back of the net in the 65th minute, assisted by
Kelsey Hogan for the first time in her career, narrowing the gap to 2-1. Colmo then netted the equalizer for RSU with her first goal of the season in the 84th minute, securing a 2-2 draw as the match concluded.
Calais Butts recorded six saves, playing the full 90 minutes in goal for the Hillcats.
Amber Arnold played a huge role on the defensive side of the pitch with 88 minutes played.
RSU will return to action Sunday against Washburn (7-2-2, 4-0-1) in Topeka at 1 p.m. from Yager Stadium.
