MARYVILLE, Mo. — Rogers State men's basketball (15-8, 9-5 MIAA) secured a 77-69 victory over Northwest Missouri State (11-13, 4-9 MIAA) to claim its first-ever win at Bearcat Arena on Saturday.
RSU built a nine-point lead by halftime and maintained its advantage despite a second-half push from the Bearcats. RSU capitalized on free throws, converting 27 of 35 attempts, and limited turnovers to just six throughout the game.
Rogers State opened the game with a strong offensive presence, quickly establishing a 9-0 lead within the first few minutes.
Andrew Mason contributed significantly with an early tip-in and a series of successful free throws. The Hillcats demonstrated effective control in the paint, scoring 20 points in the area, while their defense limited the Bearcats' opportunities, allowing only two points on fast breaks.
As the half progressed, RSU maintained its momentum through solid defensive rebounding and effective ball movement.
Tim Jordan Jr. added a three-point play to extend the lead, and
Jabryn Anderson's assists facilitated scoring opportunities. The half concluded with the Cats' leading 38-29, capitalizing on Northwest Missouri State's turnovers and maintaining a steady scoring pace.
RSU opened the second half with a swift response following a layup by Northwest, as
Caden Fry scored with an assist from
Benard Omooria. Omooria then extended the lead with a successful 3-pointer, maintaining their offensive momentum. Mason contributed to the scoring drive with consecutive layups, one assisted by Anderson, pushing the advantage further.
During the middle stretch, RSU maintained its edge, with Jordan Jr. executing a layup and completing a three-point play at 11:32, widening the gap. Defensive efforts were highlighted by Fry's steal and fast-break layup, keeping the pressure on the Bearcats. Despite a push from NWMSU to close the gap to two points, RSU kept its composure with timely free throws from Anderson and Omooria, which extended the lead.
The half concluded with RSU solidifying their control as Fry and
Damondre McKnight combined for crucial free throws, sealing a 77-69 advantage by the end of the game. RSU's efficient free-throw shooting and defensive prowess allowed them to maintain the lead, securing the victory.
Anderson recorded his third double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Mason led the scoring with 17 points and contributed defensively with two blocks. Fry added 14 points and tallied two steals. Jordan Jr. scored 13 points and grabbed three defensive rebounds.
Robert Garcia led the offensive charge for the Bearcats with 18 points, connecting on 8 of 13 field goal attempts. Aiden Gair contributed significantly with 14 points, including two 3-pointers, and added two assists. Royce Williams was instrumental on the boards, collecting 11 rebounds and dishing out six assists. Jack Ratigan made his presence felt in the paint with 10 points and 10 rebounds, achieving a double-double.
The Hillcats will return to action next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against the Bronchos in Edmond.
