CLAREMORE, Okla. - A balanced scoring attack allowed Rogers State to have its way against Southeastern Oklahoma State Tuesday night as the Hillcats cruised to an 87-69 win at the Claremore Expo.
Â
Seven RSU players tallied at least eight points, led by Eric Young and Deveric Taylor with 14 apiece. The Cats shot 48-percent from the floor and hit 11-of-23 shots from 3-point range in the contest.
Â
Both teams struggled to score the ball in the early minutes of the first half before RSU reeled off a 16-3 run. Two treys by sophomore Matt Kellogg and another by Taylor sparked the Hillcat offense. Kellogg and Taylor combined for seven 3-pointers on the night.
Â
RSU led 41-26 at the break and was never challenged in the second half. Sylvester Spicer, Abram Donlon and Aldric Reynolds joined Taylor and Young with double digits in the scoring column. Mychal Horn led the Savage Storm with 18 points while big man William Slones posted 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Â
The Hillcats avenged an ugly 55-45 loss to Southeastern last November in Durant. The Savage Storm handed RSU its first loss in program history on Nov. 26, 2007. However, there was no question as to who was the better team on the floor was this time around. The Cats held a 42-35 rebounding advantage and forced 21 turnovers. All 13 players in uniform saw action for Hillcats.
Â
Rogers State (2-0) earned its first win against an NCAA Division II opponent. Coach Lloyd Williams' club will look to notch its second victory over a Lone Star Conference foe Thursday night in Tahlequah, Okla. The Cats will face Northeastern State at Jack Dobbins Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
