CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State men's basketball team used the first half of Tuesday's exhibition opener to shake off the rust. The Hillcats then utilized the second 20 minutes to put on a clinic as they buried Rhema Bible College, 99-50 in front of 799 fans at the Claremore Expo.
Â
Senior Sylvester Spicer poured in 25 points off the bench on 10-of-13 shooting while junior Reggie Burnett scored 22 points in his RSU debut. The Eagles had no answer for the Cats size and athleticism, but did manage to grab a 49-46 rebounding advantage.
Â
Newcomer Theo Davis started the night with an alley-oop jam from Maurice Rutherford on the first possession of the game. RSU kept Rhema from scoring a single point for the first four minutes and built a 43-25 lead at the break.
Â
A 10-0 run early in the second half pushed the lead to 27 points. Spicer scored five straight points to spark the run as he converted a 3-point play with a dunk and a free throw and then added a jaw-dropping windmill dunk on the next possession. Burnett followed with a steal and jam in transition and Matt Kellogg capped the streak with a wing three.
Â
All nine Hillcats in uniform played at least 10 minutes and scored at least four points. RSU shot a scorching 66 percent from the field in the second half while holding the Eagles to 28 percent shooting. Kellogg and Joey Twilley posted 11 points each while Chris Francis added 10. The RSU bench accounted for 52 points.
Â
Rogers State returns to action Tuesday night for its second exhibition tune-up. Coach Lloyd Williams' Hillcats will welcome East Central University to the Claremore Expo with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM and online at www.rsuhillcats.com.
