Hillcat Avalanche Buries Avila, 114-81

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State offense returned to form in a big way Saturday night as the Hillcats rolled over Avila University, 114-81 at the Claremore Expo.

The Hillcats came within one basket of tying the team single-game record for points in the final game the Hoopin' for the Cure basketball classic, presented by Claremore Regional Hospital. Matt Kellogg and Lance Sullivan scorched the nets with five threes apiece. RSU finished with 14 treys in the contest, one shy of the team record.

It was Sullivan who started the offensive showcase with four threes and 14 points off the bench in the first half. The senior transfer capped a 10-0 run with a long-distance jumper that pushed the Hillcat lead to 42-22 with 3:12 remaining in the first half.  He hit two more treys before the halftime horn to give the Cats a commanding 26-point cushion at the break.

Not to be outdone, Kellogg caught up with Sullivan in the second half. He poured in 13 of his game-high 24 points in the second stanza to set a new career-high. Sullivan finished with 21 points and a game-high six steals.

Three other Hillcats joined the sharp-shooting duo in double figures. Sylvester Spicer tallied 16 points while Reggie Burnett and Jeremy Marseille both posted double-doubles. Burnett put up 13 points with 10 rebounds and Marseille added 13 points and 12 rebounds. RSU won the battle on the glass by outrebounding the Eagles, 49-33 in the contest.

Quinton Branch led three Avila players in double figures with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Adam Short scored 17 points and Alex Marler added 13. The Eagles shot 47 percent from the floor, but were undone by committing 30 turnovers.

Deveric Taylor and Chris Francis got in on the three-point-shooting barrage with two treys apiece. Joey Twilley also contributed eight points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

Rogers State (3-1) closed out a 2-0 weekend and will break for 10 days before opening conference play at John Brown on Nov. 24. Tip-off from Siloam Springs, Ark., is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
