Boyd and Burnett Bury Mid-America Christian, 97-86

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Rogers State kept its conference winning streak rolling with a 97-86 victory over Mid-America Christian at the Gaulke Activity Center in Oklahoma City Saturday.

Reggie Burnett and John Boyd put together career nights to lift the Hillcats to the win. The duo combined for 53 points on 16 of 20 shooting from the floor. Boyd tallied 26 points and 10 rebounds while Burnett finished with a game-high 27 points.

RSU jumped out to an early 13-point lead before squandering it away before halftime. The Evangels answered with a 12-0 run and grabbed the lead on a 3-pointer by Brandon Williams. MACU went ahead by 10 points at the four minute mark of the first half, but the lead was cut to six as Matt Kellogg connected on a long trey right before the halftime horn.

Kellogg opened the second half with another three as the Cats came storming out of the gate in the second period. Deveric Taylor regained the lead for RSU with a pair of field goals and a seesaw battle ensued. The two teams traded the lead 15 times in the second half before the Hillcats finally pulled away.

RSU trailed 82-79 with seven minutes remaining when Burnett went to work. The junior guard scored nine points during the Cats' decisive 15-0 run. The Evangels were held scoreless for more than six minutes. Charlie Shorter finally snapped the drought on a free throw with 50 seconds remaining, but the damage had already been done. The Hillcats outscored MACU, 52-35 in the second half to win the game going away.

Boyd and Burnett were just two of five RSU players in double figures. Kellogg scored 17 points on 5 of 7 shooting while Deveric Taylor and Lance Sullivan added 14 and 12 points, respectively. The Hillcats shot 50 percent from the floor and went 30 of 38 from the free throw line.

Shorter led the Evangels with 20 points. MACU shot 61 percent in the first half and finished at 53 percent for the game. RSU held a 37-26 advantage on the glass.

Rogers State (10-5, 3-4) won its third straight Sooner Athletic Conference game and improved to 6-0 all-time against Mid-America Christian. The Hillcats will travel to Shawnee, Okla., Thursday to face St. Gregory's. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
