SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Rogers State men's basketball team kept its winning streak rolling with a 78-65 victory over St. Gregory's University at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse in Shawnee on Saturday.
The Hillcats took a 10-point advantage into the locker room at the break. However, SGU answered in the opening minutes of the second half with a 10-2 run that cut the Cats lead to two points. RSU got back on track with an 8-0 run that pushed the lead back to 12 points with 12 minutes to play. RSU held on to the double digit lead the rest of the way.
RSU opened the game on a 6-1 run but the Cavaliers tied the game 15-15 with a trey by Fayzon Richey. Alex Ewings gave the Cats the lead back with as he drove to the basket and converted a layup. Ewings nabbed a steal on SGU's next possession and was fouled during his breakaway. He converted a free throw to sparked the Hillcat offense. Meneptha Darden hit a trey from the top of the arc to give the Hillcats a six-point lead. Kendrell Thompson hit a jumper to extended the lead to 10 points and the Hillcats clung to the lead the rest of the frame.
Five Hillcats contributed double digit scoring, led by Darden with career-high 17 points. Thompson added 13 points while Justynn Hammond and Ewings added 11 points each. Kenny Edwards rounded out the group with 10 points. RSU shot 54 percent from long distance and 60 percent from the field.
Richey led the Cavs with 30 points while Ron Waller and Dante Haynes contributed 10 points apiece.
No. 5 Rogers State (12-0, 5-0) returns to Sooner Athletic Conference action at the Claremore Expo on Monday as it hosts No. 3 Oklahoma Baptist in a highly touted Top-5 matchup at 5 p.m. The game will be streamed live at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
