LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 5 Rogers State men's basketball team overcame a 19 point deficit but couldn't hang onto a lead late falling to Lubbock Christian 92-87 in overtime inside the Rip Griffin Center Thursday evening.
Rashad Sample tallied four of the Chaparrals' 11 points in the overtime period giving LCU the victory after leading by 19 points in the first 9 minutes of the contest. The Chaparrals went on a 32-13 run topped by a Tyler Kennedy 3-pointer with 10:42 remaining in the first half. LCU held a 44-37 advantage at the intermission as the Chaps connected on 58.3 percent on treys.
RSU gained its first lead of the contest with a 3-pointer by Kendrell Thompson at the 11 minute mark of the second half as RSU went up 59-58. In the second stanza the score was tied four times and the lead changed hands 11 times.
Donald Williams hit a long jumper with his foot on the 3-point line giving RSU an 81-80 advantage with 13 seconds remaining. But Sample knocked down one of two free throws with three seconds left to tie the contest as the Chaps prevailed in overtime.
The two squads combined for 18 treys as RSU hit 52.9 percent from long distance while LCU went 9-of-19. Coach Justin Barkley's squad hit 56.9 percent from the field and 74.1 percent from the charity stripe.
Williams led all scorers with 20 points for the Hillcats. Thompson finished with 18 points, all scored in the second half, as the junior guard shot 60 percent from the field. Justynn Hammond posted 14 points and Larry Cox had 13 for RSU.
Lubbock Christian (9-8, 5-5) defeated its third ranked opponent led by Sample with 19 points. Kennedy and Douglas Williams finished with 17 points each. Anthony Brancato tallied 16 point and Jeff Ayisire posted 13 points.
Rogers State (15-3, 8-3) will travel north to face Wayland Baptist on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Plainview, Texas. The game will be carried on www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
