No. 5 Hillcats Hit the Victory Trail over Pioneers, 98-79

PLAINVIEW, Texas – No. 5 Rogers State rediscovered the win column Saturday as the Hillcat men defeated Wayland Baptist 98-79 inside the Hutcherson Center.


The Pioneers took a six point lead, its largest of the first half, near the midway point of the opening period as a Bobby Watkins jumper put WBU up 18-12.


Justynn Hammond drilled a 3-pointer with just under six minutes remaining in the first stanza to give the Hillcats a seven point advantage. WBU responded with a 14-10 run to close out the half as RSU entered the halftime locker room ahead 47-44.


An Alex Ewings steal and lay-in with 5:47 remaining put the Hillcats up 84-73 and the Hillcats held the double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

 
Six Hillcats tallied double-digit scoring as Donald Williams led the way with 17 points. Kendrell Thompson finished with 15 points and Alex Ewings chipped in with 14. Hammond and Larry Cox registered 12 points each while Kenny Edwards rounded out the double-figure scoring for RSU with 11 points.

RSU hit 57.8 percent from the field and went 8-of-14 from behind the arc. Coach Justin Barkley's squad dished out 18 assists.


George Williams and TJ Jacobs led the Pioneers with 20 points. Isaiah Jackson tallied 19 and Robert Curtis posted 11 points as WBU hit 46.2 percent from the field.
Wayland Baptist (8-11, 2-9) committed 14 turnovers as the Cats nabbed 5 steals.


Rogers State (16-3, 9-3) will once again hit the road on Thursday, Jan. 26 facing No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee. Tip time is set for 8 p.m., the game will be broadcast on www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
