CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 5 Rogers State looked like a team on a mission Saturday evening inside the Claremore Expo taking on Mid-America Christian and the Hillcats accomplished that mission by running past the Evangels 98-69.
RSU shot a remarkable 59.7 percent from the field including going 43.8 percent from behind the arc. The Cats shot a season high 91.7 percent from the free throw line as coach Justin Barkley's team outhustled the Evangels on the boards 49-19.
The Hillcats built a 10 point advantage in the opening eight minutes. RSU then went on a 11-3 run to lead 31-13 over a three minute span. The Cats were fueled by Donald Williams' 15 point output in the first stanza as RSU led 46-35 at the half.
Barkley's squad jumped ahead by 20 points for the first time in the ball game on a Kenny Edwards' 3-pointer from the top of the key at the 6:17 mark. The Hillcats were able to close out the game on an 8-0 run over the final 2:27 to snap the two game losing streak with a 98-69 victory.
Charlie Shorter led all scorers with 27 points for MACU (13-12, 8-12) as the Evangels registered nine steals. Shorter was the lone Evangel to score in double-figures.
Five Hillcats scored in double-figures. Williams led the way with 25 points marking the second straight home contest that the Baton Rouge, La. native has topped the 20 point plateau. Justynn Hammond came off the bench with 15 points and Alex Ewings added 11 as the RSU bench tallied 40 points. Starters Kendrell Thompson and Kenny Edwards finished with 13 and 11 points respectively.
Rogers State (21-6, 14-6) will close out the home schedule with Senior Night vs. Southern Nazarene. The first 750 fans will receive free "White Out" t-shirts sponsored by Midwest Sporting Goods as the Cats look to "White Out" the Crimson Storm for an 8 p.m. tip time.
