LAGUNA VISTA, Texas – No. 18 Rogers State men's golf placed second at the Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at South Padre Island Golf Club taking place Sunday and Monday.
After a Sunday opening round team total of 299 the Cats sat in fourth, four strokes behind host Texas-Brownsville at first place. RSU finished ten strokes behind the host Scorpions who claimed the team title Monday on the 6,931 yard, par-72 course.
The Hillcats' Tanner Owens claimed medalist honors in a playoff, with a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-4, No. 1 hole to top Texas-Brownsville's Adam Haley. Both Owens and Haley finished the two-round tournament carding 142. Owens shot 72-70 while Haley shot a second day best of four under par 68 after posting a 74 in the first round.
Bradley Phelps penciled in a 147 with rounds of 73-74 to tie for fourth place. Senior Bo Sarratt recovered nicely on day two carding a one-over par, 73 after shooting a 78 in the opening round. Sarratt finished 12th with a 151 tournament total moving up four spots on the leaderboard in day two.
Finishing 15th was Mariano Newton tallying 77-78 for a 155 total while Kevin Foley placed 16th totaling 156 with rounds of 77-79.
Rogers State men's golf will return to Texas next weekend for the San Antonio Shootout in Seguin, Texas on Feb. 27-28.
