WICHITA, Kan. - The Rogers State University women's basketball team rallied back to take a lead late in the game but could not hold on falling 64-62 on the road at Newman University in Heartland Conference action Thursday from Fugate Gymnasium.
After the Jets opened the game with a 10-5 run, the Hillcats stormed back to take their first lead of the game with 11:47 remaining in the first stanza 14-12 behind back-to-back three pointers by DaNara Day and Kami Bunch. RSU finished the half with five made three-point baskets from four different players.
Newman, now 8-7 overall (5-4 HC) controlled the remainder of the half building an 11-point edge 33-22 late in the frame before taking a 35-26 advantage into the break.
Rogers State (4-11 overall, 1-8 HC) kept the game within reach in the second half cutting the deficit to 51-46 with 11 minutes to play after Day grabbed a rebound, drove the length of the court, and dished off a pass to Breanna Burford for an open layup.
The Hillcats clawed their way back and took their largest lead of the night 60-56 with less than five minutes remaining sparked again by triples from Bunch and Day.
The lead dissipated down the stretch as the Jets converted from the free throw line to even the score 61-61 in the final 1:30 but Clarissa Cannon a free throw of her own putting RSU back up 62-61.
Newman's Alexandra Ciabattoni got inside the Hillcat defense and scored a tough basket with 20 seconds to play tallying game-high 16 points and RSU could not notch the game winner as the Jets won for the third-consecutive time to sweep the season series with RSU.
Day led the Hillcats with 15 points while Burford and Cannon hit double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively, while each added a game-high nine rebounds.
