No. 7 St. Mary's Takes Two from RSU

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS- The Rogers State baseball team suffered a Heartland Conference doubleheader sweep against No. 7 St. Mary's at Dickson Stadium on Friday afternoon.

The Rattlers posted a run in each of the first three innings to jump out to an early lead in game one and registered a 12-4 victory. In the nightcap, StMU was led by a standout pitching performance by Matt McClain that helped the Rattlers to a 2-0 win.

Game One

The Rattlers banged out 12 hits en route to the 12-4 victory in the opener.  StMU tallied a run in each of the first three inning and took control in the fifth, adding six runs on three hits with the help of one Hillcat error.

RSU battled back in the top of the fifth, stringing together four runs on five hits. Alex Cochran sparked the offense with a one-out double to right field and Chase Knott followed with a single up the middle to put runners on first and third. Johan Ochoa put the Hillcats on the scoreboard with a RBI single in the left-center field gap. Caleb Kohlmeyer loaded the bases with a single and Blake Gipson drew a walk to bring in a run. Nick Malter rounded out the scoring with a two RBI fielder's choice.

Despite the four-run sixth, the Hillcats were unable to claw back into the contest as the Rattlers answered with a trio of runs in the bottom of the inning.

Four Hillcats took the mound for RSU as starter Jesse Baird was tagged with the loss, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs with six earned on eight hits with three strikeouts.

Game Two

RSU's bats went quiet in the nightcap as McClain registered a no hitter on the mound for StMU, striking out 12 Hillcats on the night.

The contest was a pitcher's duel as neither team generated much of an offense. St. Mary's dented the scoreboard in the sixth with a one-out RBI double by Omar Garcia. The Hillcats threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh as Cochran tallied a leadoff walk and advance to third with a groundout and a wild pitch. With two outs, Kohlmeyer drew a walk but McClain was able hold the Hillcats scoreless.

StMU doubled its lead in the eighth with a RBI single by Nathan Humpal.

T.J. Law (1-2) was tagged with the loss for RSU as he tossed seven innings, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts. Edward Layton tossed the eighth, allowing one run on one hit.

Rogers State (6-3, 0-2) will round out the series with St. Mary's on Saturday at 1 p.m. as the Hillcats look to avoid the sweep in the nine-inning affair.
