CLAREMORE, Okla.- The Rogers State baseball team swept a doubleheader against Heartland Conference opponent Oklahoma Panhandle State Friday afternoon at the Diamond Sports Complex.
The Hillcats took advantage of four Aggie errors and tallied eight hits en route to a 4-0 victory. In the nightcap, RSU belted 10 hits to register a 5-2 win.
GAME ONE
The Hillcats capitalized on four errors by OPSU in the 4-0 victory. RSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second with the help of a throwing error by the Aggies. Ryan Hendricks led the inning reaching on the error that put him on second base. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out by Logan Palmer. J.P. Seifried kept the inning going with single and scored on a double slapped to right-center by Joe Crow.
In the third, Chase Knott led off the inning with a single and scored with the help of an error by the Aggies. RSU capped the scoring in the fifth as a two-out error led to the Hillcats fourth run of the contest.
Mason Marquette tallied the win on the mound, tossing the complete game, allowing five hits while fanning four. Spencer Long suffered the loss, allowing four unearned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Chase Knott led the team, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
GAME TWO
In the nightcap, RSU dented the scoreboard first as Blake Gipson ripped a single down the left field line to drive in Cochran, who led off the inning with a walk.
The advantage was short-lived as the Aggies loaded the bases in the top of the second, driving in a run with a sacrifice fly by Robert Montoya.
In the bottom of the third frame, RSU regained the lead with an RBI groundout by Hendricks that sent Knott home after opening the inning with a walk.
OPSU battled back to knot the score in the top of the fourth but the Hillcats answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Palmer started the inning with a single belted to the left-center gap and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Culwell. Cochran plated the go-ahead run with a single through the left side and Gipson singled to left field to send Cochran home.
With two outs in the eighth, RSU strung together three consecutive hits including an RBI single by Caleb Kohlmeyer to make it a 5-2 game.
T.J. Law registered the win on the mound, tossing seven innings, allowing two runs with one earned on five hits with four strikeouts. Travis Teague closed out the final two hitless innings, earning his second save of the year with three strikeouts.
Rogers State (15-21, 8-15 HC) will complete the three-game series against the Aggies Saturday with a nine-inning game slated for 1 p.m. The Hillcats will honor eight seniors prior to the game at 12:45 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
