CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State men's basketball team drained a school-record 18 three pointers in a convincing 102-71, Heartland Conference victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday afternoon at the Claremore Expo Center.
Donald Moore hit six triples, ranking fourth in single-game history, and started a perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the floor before finishing with a game-high 22 points. The 18 from long range topped the previous record set earlier this season against Bacone.
Jeylyn Sharpe and
Robert Johnson converted touches inside the paint scoring on the first two RSU possessions before the Aggies scored the next six points. RSU answered with a triple from
Travis Hester as the teams traded leads until the Cats took over the remainder of the half. An 11-2 run for the home side stretched the advantage to double figures, 26-16, on one of Moore's five, first-half three pointers.
RSU scored 10 consecutive points over a four-minute span pushing its lead to 20 points, 52-32, with 1:33 remaining in the half. The Hillcats headed into the locker room in front 55-36 as Sharpe knocked down the 11th triple of the half.
Two early second-half threes from
J.C. Hartzler and Moore pushed the RSU advantage to 22 points at 61-39. The Aggies put together a 9-2 run to pull to within 15 at 66-48; however, the lead never fell below 15 points for the rest of the contest.
The Hillcats ended the game with a 10-0 run to pull away, 102-71. Hester started the spurt with a three-pointer with 2:40 remaining. Sharpe hit a long jumper for a 97-71 advantage, and
Johnathon Buckley hit two free throws for 99-71 score with 1:09 left.
Kyler Ng knocked in the record-breaking three from the left wing to put RSU up 102-71 with 31 seconds remaining.
Sharpe added 16 points from the field, and
J.C. Hartzler totaled 14 points with 13 points coming in the second half. Also in double figures was Hester with 11 points.
Corey Ayala came off the bench to register a game-high six assists along with nine points and six rebounds. A total of 11 Hillcats scored in the win.
For the game, RSU shot a sizzling 62.5 percent (35-56) from the field, the fourth best shooting percentage in RSU history and 64.3 percent (18-28) from three-point range, ranking fifth all-time.
RSU (13-3 overall, 5-3 HC) is back on the road Jan. 21 for a matchup at Newman. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. and can be heard live on the Hillcat Network at
