HILTON HEAD, S.C. –
Jess Whitting earned a third-place finish to lead the Rogers State Women's Golf team at the 2019 Battle at Hilton Head Island.
Whitting led the Hillcats on both days of the tournament in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Perth, Australia native managed to best her day one score of a two-over-par 74 with a final day 73. The sophomore finished the day with five birdies and just four holes over par. She had a stretch of eight holes with par or better scores.
Whitting finished third for the tournament, only two strokes behind the individual winner, Lucy Eaton from Florida Tech.
The team finished +62 over the course of the two-day tournament, shooting +31 as a team on both days of the tournament. The Hillcats finished in seventh place overall, seven strokes out of sixth place and nine strokes out of placing fifth in the highly competitive field.
Jessica Green was another golfer who improved on her day one score in Hilton Head. Green was +9 with an 81 on day one. Day two saw Green drop in her first birdie of the tournament and finish one stroke better with a +8 and an overall weekend score of 161 over 36 holes.
Raquel Flores and
Sydney Murray both shot rounds of 83 to finish +11 for the day. Flores finished +20 for the tournament with a 164, while Murray shot 166 for the event.
Flores finished the tournament with two birdies on the final day, while Murray had nine pars and had a stretch of five consecutive pars on day two.
Mariana Flores also finished with nine pars, and her best stretch came with five consecutive pars from holes 11-15.
Women's Golf tees off next in the Fujikura Invitational at Shadow Ridge Country Club in Vista, California beginning on March 11.
