OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - A second half shooting assault pushed No. 3 Rogers State to its second win over a ranked opponent in as many weeks as the Hillcats drained No. 21 Oklahoma City, 78-67 Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Â
Sophomore Deveric Taylor buried seven of the Cats 15 treys in the game to break the individual and team single-game 3-point records. Taylor and fellow sophomores Matt Kellogg and Chris Francis combined for 11 second half 3s against the Stars zone defense. The trio went a combined 15-for-27 from behind the arc on the night.
Â
The Hillcats trailed by two at halftime after OCU put together a 13-2 run late in the first half. However, Taylor opened the second half with back-to-back 3s to give RSU a lead it would never relinquish. The only thing that slowed the Cats offense in the second half was a 15 minute delay when the shot clock fell collapsed following a thunderous dunk by Sylvester Spicer.
Â
Once the shot clock was back in working order Kellogg started heating up. He scored 10 straight points for RSU to stretch the lead to 61-49 with nine minutes remaining. Francis followed with a 3-pointer and Taylor and Kellogg joined in with back-to-back bombs to make it 72-53 with just over five minutes left.
Â
Taylor's final trey came with 2:55 remaining as he let one fly from six feet behind the arc to set the new record. A flurry of points by DaVell Jackson in the closing minutes cut the final margin to 11. He finished with 16 points while Richard Jackson led all scorers with 25.
Â
Taylor posted a career-high 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Kellogg tied his single-game best with 19 and Francis added 9. Junior Eric Young tallied 10 points and seven rebounds in just 19 minutes of playing time. Senior Roderick Rodgers dished out six of the Cats 21 assists.
Â
RSU shot 48 percent from the field, including an 11-for-17 effort from 3-point range in the second half. OCU shot 46 percent and outrebounded the Cats 35-34 despite playing only seven players.
Â
Rogers State (14-1, 8-1) remains alone in first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings following the victory. The Hillcats will return home Saturday to face Mid-America Christian at the Claremore Expo. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. and the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a free RSU Spirit Hand courtesy of Hillcat athletics. The game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
