Rogers State Survives Scare from Saints, 63-62

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - A shorthanded and injury plagued Rogers State team limped out of Mabee Gymnasium with a 63-62 victory over Our Lady of the Lake University Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.

Reggie Burnett buried a wing jumper with 11 seconds remaining and the RSU defense made a final stand to escape with the win. The junior transfer played 38 minutes and finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and the single biggest bucket of his young career.

The Hillcats suited up only eight players for the first leg of their two-game Texas road trip. By halftime they were down to six as Deveric Taylor and Matt Kellogg went down with injuries. Burnett, along with veterans Sylvester Spicer and Chris Francis were forced to carry the load, accounting for 73 percent of the Cats' offense in the contest.

RSU played from behind for much of the afternoon as the Saints exploited the Hillcats' lack of depth by pushing the tempo and extending their defense. The Cats were held to a season-low three 3-pointers while the majority of their sharp-shooters watched from the bench.

A gutsy performance by the six men left standing willed RSU to the win. Spicer posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Francis added 12 points and five boards. Freshman Alex Ewings and sophomores Joey Twilley and Jeremy Marseille each played at least 23 minutes, including virtually the entire second half. The trio of underclassmen helped the Cats overcome a four-point halftime deficit and grab a crucial, 41-31, advantage on the boards.

The Saints put up much more of a fight on their home floor after suffering a 28-point loss to sixth-ranked Hillcats three weeks ago in Claremore, Okla. Ricardo Zanini led the effort with 14 points. OLLU shot 42 percent from the field in the first half, but was held to only eight field goals in the second stanza.

The 63-point outing marked the lowest scoring output for the Hillcats since the final game of the 2007-08 season and the fewest points ever scored in an RSU victory.

Rogers State (4-2) will conclude its two-game road trip at Huston-Tillotson Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
