CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State men's basketball team closed out Homecoming Week with a firework show as they defeated Ozark Christian College, 110-49.
OCC tied the Hillcats at 9-9 just three minutes into the opening stanza but RSU quickly jumped ahead by ten with 14:04 remaining on a pair of Kendrell Thompson free throws. The Cat lead ballooned to 38 after A.J. Stewart knocked in a field goal with 1:17 prior to the intermission. At the half, RSU led the Ambassadors 60-25.
Jeremy Marseille scored his first points of the season with 13:05 remaining to put RSU up at 81-31. A Justynn Hammond layup gave the Hillcats a 61 point lead with just over eight minutes remaining. With 4:28 on the clock Alex Ewings drilled a 3-pointer for the largest lead of the game at 71 points.
All but one Hillcat scored as RSU posted the largest victory in Homecoming history. The previous high came in the opening season vs. Bethany College 116-62, for a 54 point deficit.
Donald Williams led all scorers with 21 points as the junior guard knocked in 5-of-6 from behind the arc. Four of the five Hillcat starters hit double-digit scoring. Hammond had an impressive afternoon posting 11 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and nabbing four steals. Ewings posted a career high 17 points off the bench hitting 6-of-6 from the field.
RSU hit 57 percent from the field and converted upon 17-of-25 free throws. Ozark Christian shot 31 percent on the day while knocking in just 21 percent from behind the arc.
OCC was led in scoring by Hunter Jacobs with 18 points and Trevor Mason with 15. The Ambassadors (0-3) turned the ball over 27 times as the Hillcats came away with 16 steals and seven blocks.
Rogers State (3-0) takes a 10-day hiatus before returning to competition on Nov. 22 as it opens Sooner Athletic Conference play at John Brown, tip time is at 8 p.m. Live audio streaming will be provided on www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
