SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - The Rogers State men's basketball team opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a dominating 88-66 victory over John Brown at Bill George Arena on Tuesday evening.
JBU registered the first bucket of the game and the teams exchanged the lead for the first five minutes of the game. The Golden Eagles took a two point advantage with a three pointer by Abel Galliguez but that was the last time JBU saw the lead.
Kendrell Thompson hit a trey from the top of the key and it was all RSU from there. RSU used a 13-6 run to take a 10 point lead. Donald Williams and Justynn Hammonds buried back-to-back buckets from long distance to increase the lead to 15 points. RSU took a 43-26 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
RSU opened the second frame with a 10-0 run. Adrian Miller broke the dry spell for JBU with a layup with 15:45 to play. But the deficit was too much for the Golden Eagles to overcome as the RSU offense continued to pour on the points. The Hillcats largest lead of the night came with 11 minutes to play as Ryan Keese hit a jumper to cap off a 9-0 run and give the Cats a 64-32 advantage.
Four Hillcats posted double figures scoring, led by Thompson with 15 points and four assists. Hammonds added 14 points, A.J. Stewart poured in 13 points and Meneptha Darden put up 10 points. Williams tallied nine points as he was perfect form long distance, burying three treys.
The Hillcats shot a 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the arc. RSU swatted eight shots on the night and Darden led the team with three blocks.
The Hillcats snapped the Golden Eagles six-game winning streak as they enter the night undefeated on the season. RSU broke a streak of its own tonight, defeating JBU for the first time since March 6, 2009 when the Cats slipped past the Golden Eagles 87-85 in the SAC Tournament semifinals. Prior to tonight, JBU had earned five-straight victories over RSU.
Rogers State (4-0, 1-0) will break for Thanksgiving and return to the hardwood on Monday as they travel to Ecclesia College. The game will tip-off at 8 p.m. and live audio will be streamed at www.rsuhillcat.com/live.
