CLAREMORE, Okla.- After three consecutive ties in Sooner Athletic Conference play, the Rogers State men's soccer team registered a much needed 2-0 win over John Brown on Friday night at Soldier Field.
The Hillcats outshot the Golden Eagles 13-5 in the opening stanza but the game was scoreless as the teams went to the locker rooms at the break.
Junior Niall Masterson broke the tie seven minutes into the second half as he weaved through the defense and slotted the ball back post into the goal, giving RSU a 1-0 lead. It was the Dublin, Ireland native's third goal of the season.
RSU's leading goal scorer, Necas Collins, registered an insurance goal in the 75th minute of the game. Mitchell Sowerby headed the ball into the box off a corner kick from the far side of the field where Garron Hayes headed it amongst a scrum and Collins poked it into the goal. It was the sophomore's ninth goal of the season.
Nathan Inger tallied his third shutout of the year for the Hillcats as he made four saves. JBU goalkeeper Pablo Garcia was tagged with the loss as he hauled in seven saves while allowing two goals.
Rogers State (6-6-3, 2-1-3) moved into a tie for third place in the league with Oklahoma Baptist after the win. The two teams will face off in Claremore on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
