WICHITA, Kan. – The Rogers State baseball team split a two-game doubleheader at Newman on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Field. The Jets won game one, 5-4, and the Hillcats responded to belt out 17 hits in a 7-3 game two win.
GAME ONE
RSU scored one run in each of the first four innings to build a 4-2 advantage, however, the Jets plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to get a 5-4 win.
The Hillcat scoring started in the first when
Jason Marley singled up the middle to score lead-off hitter
Colton Crocker for a 1-0 edge.
NU used a two-RBI single to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Crocker knotted the score at 2-2 with a single to right field that allowed
Garrett Hall to score after an error in the outfield. Another run scored in the third inning when
Jordan Garr plated Marley for a 3-2 edge. Continuing the trend of one run an inning was
Chris Miguel with a sac fly to score Crocker for a 4-2 lead after the top of the fourth inning.
The Jets put up three runs in their half of the fourth inning to gain a 5-4 advantage that they held for the rest of the game. With the bases loaded, a single and fielder's choice tied the score at 4-4. A bases loaded hit by a pitch scored the game-winning run.
Crocker went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and reached on two walks. Marley finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
GAME TWO
The Hillcats totaled 17 hits to score seven runs, and the pitching staff limited NU to two earned runs and six hits in a 7-3 win in game two.
The top three in the lineup: Crocker,
Caleb Kohlmeyer and Marley each tallied three hits. Miguel, Hall and Garr finished with two hits each as eight Hillcats registered hits.
Senior starter
Michael Fusselman went seven innings allowing only four hits and one earned run with two strikeouts.
Josh Eclavea came for relief, and
Rusty Huber closed the game for his 12 save of the season.
With the bases loaded, Miguel drove in a run on a groundout to give RSU an early 1-0 lead.
Kohlmeyer increased the edge to 3-0 with a two-RBI single through the infield to bring in Garr and Hall in the second inning.
After one run by the Jets, RSU added three runs to pull out to a 6-1 lead.
Danny Donoghue doubled to center to plate
Zack Ashford, and two runs scored on a Crocker single for the 6-1 score.
NU's Garett Thomas hit a solo home run to right field for the second Jet run.
Miguel matched Thomas with a solo home run to left field for a 7-2 advantage. NU added one late run for the 7-3 final score.
